What goes on in Amazon Shelter?

Amazon Shelter rescues wildlife in Peru from habitat loss, hunting, mining, and the illegal wildlife trade for over 14 years. Each animal is lovingly rehabilitated and eventually released back into the wild.

Amazon Shelter’s goal is to be a voice for wildlife in the Amazon rainforest. Due to logging, mining, and deforestation, many animals are captured, abused, or sold in the pet trade.

Their mission is to protect and rehabilitate all animals in its care and successfully reintroduce them to the forest, giving wildlife a second chance at life in the wild.

Magali and her team have been successful in rehabilitating and returning hundreds of animals to the forest over the last 14 years and they strive to make each year more successful.

Additionally, they are dedicated to educating locals, tourists, students, and beyond about the importance of wild animals and their natural habitats.

OUR ANIMALS NEED YOUR HELP.

The most exciting part of being a volunteer is that you will be in direct contact with the wild animals of the rainforest. You will help feed, care for, and rehabilitate everything from howler monkeys to tapirs to wild birds, improving their well-being and preparing them for a return to the wild.

We rehabilitate a variety of animals, from howler monkeys and capuchin monkeys to larger mammals such as red deer, peccary, and tapir, and several different bird species, including great macaws, parrots, and parakeets. Every animal received goes through rigorous health checks and we create specific healthy diets for each animal we care for. Once they are healthy, we prepare them for release into the wild.

CHOOSE YOUR OWN PROJECT.

In addition to helping with food, medicine and cleaning, you can also choose a project of your own that you are passionate about during your time with us, whether it is helping to enrich the enclosures or design lifestyle elements for the animals, painting an environment, feed the young animals, help with media like photography or work with our educational outreach. We even have a food garden that you could help develop. And when we reinsert rehabilitated animals back into the wild, some volunteers are needed to help scout locations, assist with release, and monitor them post-release.
