Lake Sandoval 3 days / 2 nights
3 Days – 2 Nights
ITINERARY
DAY 1.- “Sandoval Lake” / Jungle Hike / Caiman Watching
Airport and/or bus station pickup, transfer to the office where you can leave any luggage not included in the tour. Then transfer to the port (port captain) for a 15-minute boat ride down the Madre de Dios River in a motorized boat to take us to our accommodation. We will receive all the information for our stay at Lake Sandoval with the Mejía family. From our accommodation, we will travel 10 minutes by boat to reach the shores of the Sandoval Lake port, where we will enter the Tambopata Reserve “Sandoval Lake” with an approximately 1-hour hike. Upon arrival at the lake, we will take a canoe to paddle across this beautiful lake, home to a wide variety of birds and animals. We will arrive at the family-run lodge, where we will settle into our rooms. At midday, we will have lunch at Lake Sandoval. After lunch, those who wish can swim in Lake Sandoval safely. Then we will return to our lodge, have dinner, and then take a night walk to see some of the animals and/or insects that come out at night. Afterward, we will return to our lodge where we will spend the night in our comfortable accommodations.
DAY 2 – TAMBOPATA RESERVE / GIANT OTTER SIGHTING / PARROT PALM CLAY LAKE
We will wake up early to cross the lake by canoe and take a short trail alongside the main road. About 1 km from the trail, there is a special place where parrots and macaws gather every morning to eat tree bark, which is very rich in minerals. Dozens of blue-and-yellow macaws, as well as red-and-blue macaws, take turns eating the minerals on the dead palms or on the palm trees where they nest. Upon returning from the parrot show, we have the opportunity to see the friendly family of giant otters, who are very active on the lake at that time. Giant otters eat an average of 8 pounds (4 kilos) of fish per day. Lake Sandoval offers abundant wildlife, including six species of monkeys, black caimans, more than 40 species of resident birds along the lake’s shores, all five species of kingfisher found in Peru, and the largest group of hoatzins. All the animals here are easy to photograph from the boats. We return to the lodge and enjoy a well-deserved breakfast. Then we venture into the rainforest to observe giant trees such as kapok, ironwood, and Brazilian walnut. Our guide will show you how we harvest and market these products, which are so important to our local economy. Afterward, we return to the lodge for a delicious lunch. In the afternoon, we’ll take our canoe to the observation tower, where we can enjoy a beautiful sunset and explore a different area of the lake in search of the various monkey troops, which are very active at this time of day. Brown capuchin and squirrel monkeys live in the forest near the lake. To end the day, before dinner, we’ll take a night walk to observe insects, tarantulas, and snakes. Finally, dinner and rest.
